My company was the only one making the kind of hardware that made up an enormous chunk of the smartphone market, and I was going to make it great.
I had built a company with an incredible vision.
I was the CEO of a company that made the best smartphones in the world, and we were going to win back the hearts and minds of the people who loved them.
It was my dream to build something that could be trusted.
In the years that followed, that dream became a nightmare.
A new wave of technology, a new wave in tech, had radically changed the way people work.
And with it came a new set of challenges for my team.
As the market was saturated with products, we had to figure out how to make sure that those products weren’t just selling phones, but making us better.
We had to decide whether we were building a company to make a better world, or to make money.
And the decisions that we made have been consequential, but also deeply personal.
To make a phone is to make your life better.
That is our job.
When I tell people that they have a job, they often say, “Oh, yeah, but you’re not the CEO.”
That is not true.
We make the phones.
We hire the people.
We design them.
We build them.
When we talk about making a phone, we mean it.
We have to make that phone.
We must build the phone that is better than the phones of the past, better than what phones were like in 2012.

How to build the best phone ever This isn’t a new question.

I am from a small city in Northern California, in a large suburb of the Bay Area.
